  • maureen i make it all the time, it is alot of work, but whenever we go to any party all ask for my german potato salad lots of bacon, bacon fat and vinegar with sugar, i serve it hot in crock pot,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it is always a hit, thank u grandmom
    • You GOT to have the bacon fat - nothing wrong with it!! My mom makes it on special occasions and we DID have it this xmas (sorry Brian, you missed it on xmas day, but we did have it) I love it. - actually hid the leftovers so I could eat them later!!!)

I don't know if I ever had Grandmom's version, but I know my Mom's is really good!!
  • The German Potato Salad is still made today by my Mom and I gotta say it's just like Grandmom's. I get her recipe and there is bacon in it. There is not grease used in the Potato Salads but I definitely know for sure her fried tomatos were fried in old bacon grease that she kept in a coffee can in the freezer. (sometimes there were coffee grinds in the grease, but who cared. I get my Mom to give me the recipe and post it. As far as the cole slaw, she did make her own dressing and I think it was with mayo, white vinegar and some sugar.
    • Please post that potato Salad recipe. I would like to try it. I make coleslaw the same way. Mayo, vinegar, sugar, and pepper. Got it from my Mom who may have gotten it from Grandmom.
    • she cooked her coleslaw dressing it had dry mustardand something else no mayo do u remember her grinder, she always let me grind up potato peels it use to hook on to her kitchen the cabinet had a flat surface where she would crank it on i wish i could be as great a grandmom as she was.........well i am almost!!
  • I'd love to get the recipe for her potato salad. And any other recipes of hers anyone has. I was thinking about her home made cole slaw. All I remember is that she didn't use mayo, but made her own dressing.
  • Frances makes it every now and then, but it's never 'AS GOOD' as Grandmom's! Yes, bacon was a main ingredient and you had to eat it warm!
  • It definately has bacon in it, but I don't know if the grease is used. Maybe Grandmom put it in there. We normally have it on Christmas eve every year, but this year was bizarro Christmas and we didn't have it for some reason. I love that stuff! I've gotten Heidi to make it once or twice. You serve it warm and I think there's brown sugar in it too to give it a carmel color. Great stuff.
