My Father, Daniel Francis Casey, was an airplane mechanic serving in France in World War I along with my Mothers' brother William Waples, who later had a jewelry store on Samson St in Phila., where each of us three girls worked at one time or another. My Father was loading a plane in France when a package broke open and the contents injured one of his eyes. He received a $75 compensation a month for the injury, for the rest of his life. At one time after the war he was learning to be an undertaker, but that did not last long and he then switched to carpentry.

  • The way I remember that story was after World War I, Grandpop had the choice to be trained as an undertaker or a carpenter.

A summer or two ago, my mom, Aunt Mae and Aunt Kas told a story about Uncle Bill Waples had a when he was in France. After the war she came over expecting him to marry her. He wasn't into her, and the poor love struck woman had to return to France.
  • I never knew he went over to France during the first war. I don't think anyone ever told me that, but maybe I just don't remember. (nothing new).

One thing I do remember very clearly though is playing with an old rifle in the basement on Magee street. They told us it was Grandpop's from the war. We played with that thing ALL the time. A real authentic rifle used in the war. What could be cooler!!
