Walt was stationed in San Diego and was secretary to George O'Brian, the western movie actor. Then he volunteered to go overseas and was stationed in Hawaii for the remainder of the war. His office broke codes and sent the information to Admiral Nimitz of the U.S. Naval Fleet. He had a lot to do with destroying the Japanese fleet under Admiral Yakimoto. (Not sure of his name)

  • WOW! what a life! so full of some GREAT experiences. I NEVER KNEW what a FULFILLED life Poppop really did live. I guess all those stories in the past that he told us and we were too little or immature to listen to back then WERE REALLY full of some interesting facts. GOES TO SHOW you can't take some for granted and makes me regret not hearing them (REALLY HEARING) when he was around to tell them.......
    • He repeated his stories so we all tuned him out, but they were interesting. What I would give to hear one right now.
  • Dad told me he volunteered to go overseas because he was itching to see combat. He didn't want to be stuck in an office in Washington for the duration. When he volunteered to go overseas, they told him he would be stationed in combat. But when he arrived in Hawaii, they stationed him in the office there. He couldn't get transferred off. He told my boys when he left on the ship to leave Hawaii, the tradition was to throw a flower lei in the water to float back to the beach so you would be sure to return to the islands. Dad said, he'd would like to have thrown a lei of horse manure, so it would break apart, and he wouldn't ever have to return to Hawaii. There were so many servicemen in Hawaii and so few women. I think he was pretty frustrated there. No combat, no women. He did have a pet pig they kept in a pen. He had fond memories of that pig. Unfortunately, the next guys there, butchered the pig and ate him. Such is the way of life. One man's pet is another's dinner.
    • Thats a good story, I remember hearing that.
