My brothers Bill and Dan were in the army during World War II. Bill went overseas and Dan was on the west coast waiting to go overseas. He had an asthma attack and was then discharged. I was in the Waves during the war. I had my naval training in Cedar Falls Iowa. I was stationed at Naval Communications in DC where I met my future husband, Walter. Naval Communications later became, and is still, The National Security Agency. Walt worked there for over 30 years. It is now at Ft. Meade, which is expanding rapidly because of 9/11. There is an NSA Museum out near the University of Maryland (where Joyce went to school) where my picture in my Wave uniform is, along with others ,and tremendously large computers used at NSA are kept (the original computers.)

  • Hi Aunt Mae. I remember seeing a picture of you in your uniform on the wall in Grandmom and Grandpop's "sitting room" on the second floor on Magee Street. My father told me you were in the Waves and didn't know what that meant at the time, but thought you were so brave. I always asked my dad what Uncle Walt did and it was just a big secret all the time. What exactly did Uncle Walt do for the government. Can you tell us now? I've often wondered and every time I saw him I thought to myself, well, he certainly doesn't look like a spy, and he certainly was too smart to be an agent, so I thought maybe he worked listening to conversations from Gorbechev or Castro during the Cold War. I thought that may be new the Russian language, or, since you lived in Japan for many years, he knew Japanese. You were living in Japan when my parent's married and you brought with you when you returned a tea set with plates that had an impression where the cups when and the plate extended to put your cake or what have you on it. My mom displayed that set in her china closet for as long as I remember and loved the story that they were a gift from You and Uncle Walt for their wedding. When she moved, she asked if I wanted them, and I was soooo happy. I proudly display the beloved tea set in my china closet and it is still there. So what's the scoop on Uncle Walt's secret job? Love Donna.
