Eggtrick and Privacy

Update: 12/28/07: After discussing this a bit, we've decided to make the site private except for the home page. The home page still displays 'headlines' from recent posts, and rotates through pictures, but you can't click on them or save them unless you're a member and log-in. If you have any questions or concerns about privacy and this web site, please let me know. Thanks LJC Original Post: One thing that I havent really made clear to everyone here is the issue of privacy and the information / pictures etc. we're posting. Please be aware that this content is available to the general public The way the site currently works (and this is easy to change) is that everyone on the internet can see and read what we post here. The general public cannot upload pictures or make comments on anything, but they can read the content. We should all keep this very important point in mind when posting content - and - is this something we should change? Another option is for this to be a members-only site. Only approved members will be able to log-in and see the content. I've thought about this a little, and personally I'm open to either option. But I'd like to get some opinions on this from whoever's got one.... With a public site, I would always keep this very important point in mind every time I post content or add comments etc. If the site were private, I would be more liberal in the amount of personal information I would post. So let me know what you guys think here. It's an easy change, and if we change our minds, we could always change it back. Hope you-all are having fun getting ready for the holidays, and will get a chance to sit and enjoy the moment. (at least one moment anyway!) LJC

  • It looks like there is a reasonable compromise that comes out of the box. We can make the site private (i.e. only members can log in and read/post things). But we can make the home page public to everyone. Nobody will be able to get past the home page unless they log in.

I turned this on this morning and lets see how it goes.

Hope everyone had a great holiday!!
  • Is it all or nothing? I'd like to be able to share the egg trick v ideo with friends who aren't members, but as all 'members' will (I assume) be family members, we might feel falsely comfortable sharing personal information. Can our personal pages be limited to members only, but forums be public? How granular is the privacy controls?
    • It's not very granular. It's really all or nothing. The options are:
      a. Totally open - anyone can join, anyone can read / post - this is a totally public social network
      b. Half and half - only approved members can join and post content, but anyone can see our content
      c. Totally closed - everyone who comes to the site will be asked to log-in. Once you log in, you can read and post content.

There are some other options that I want to look into here, and I'll keep you posted. But for now, these are the options.

So let me know if you have a preference. I can change it to option (c) very quickly if that's what people think we should do.

Meanwhile, if you or anyone else sees anyone post any personal information, please let me know ASAP. It's an easy mistake to make, and if we start seeing this, I'll definately change it to a closed network. None of us will really notice, it'll just be those who are not members that will see the difference.
