The only thing I remember is hearing how because Grandpop was Catholic he wasn't welcome in the Waple's house to court Grandmom. They had to sit out on the steps. While Uncle Putts, who was protestant was invited into the parlor to court Aunt Ruth. Does anyone know if the Waples were Lutheran?

  • I guess I heard that story of Dan & Mae courting on the stoop from my dad's poem he wrote for the Casey's 50th anniversary party. We have a video that was transferred from a home movie made at that party that we should have put onto Video and put on this site. I'll look for my copy.

I asked mom this morning how Grandmom and Grandpop met, and she said she didn't know but they knew each other before Grandpop went to WWI. When he came home they started courting.

Mom also said that when Dan and Mae (Grandmom and Grandpop) first had my mother they lived with her parents. Mom was not quite two when her grandmother Waples died. She told Grandmom that "missy" was waking up. Then she went into the john and had a massive stroke that killed her. She was only 51.

Mom says that her grandfather didn't treat his wife very well when she was alive. He remarried another woman who made his life miserable. I guess what goes around, comes around. My mother said that her grandfather Waples worked for Uncle Bill at the jewelry store and that Uncle Bill treated his dad horribly. Apparently Uncle Bill was not a nice man to work for. That's why my mom went into the Navy, to get away from him. Although this ring I have was given to my mom from Uncle Bill, that ended up going to Grandmom in 1955. So she said he was always giving them things.
  • I don't know much about the early years, but I do remember my Dad telling me how every sunday they would take Grandmom to her church, and Grandpop and the kids would go to the catholic church. A true example of freedom of religion, all under one roof, and for all those years!
