This menu explains the old tabu system in Hawaii. The Hawaiians gave up their old religion and system of tabu one year before the Christian missionaries came to convert them. They were wide open for something new and are still mostly very Christian to this day. It's gringos like me that study the ancient kahuna system with those traditional Hawaiians that are renewing the good parts of the old religion.
When Walt was in the Navy and had Island fever on Oahu he went over to the Big Island for a week. He had a car and traveled around the Big Island. He always remembered the famous black sand beach there and how odd it was to look at your feet with black sand on them. He also remembered the fine eating that could be had there. Big Island has a traditional cowboy culture. The biggest ranch in America is still there. Dad enjoyed his steak dinners there.
When Peter and I spent time on the Big Island we fell in love with it and considered moving there. Then we found Kauai which Peter is enamored of. I wanted to go to the Big Island, he wanted to move to Kauai. So we stayed in California. We might make it over there someday.
