They both worked in the Navy at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. I think they met in 1944 or 1945 when Dad returned to D.C. after being in Hawaii for 3 years. Mom took a shine to Dad right away. She said the sound of his voice over the phone gave her a thrill. I didn't hear how much in love she was until after dad died.
Anyhow, my dad was released from the service. He had applied for a job as a civilian for the organization he had worked for in the Navy that became National Security Agency. He hadn't heard from them so he returned to California where his mother was living and got a job selling insurance. Mae and Walt corresponded. When he heard that he'd gotten hired by the government, mom wrote to him that she could get a good deal on a ring from her uncle in the jewelry business. I guess they had an understanding, but mom doesn't know if he ever really proposed. But he was smitten, so they married on April 16, 1946. (Not exactly sure that was the date, but it was April 1946.)
What a beautiful picture...and Chris looks just like Uncle Walt...do you know how they met? How long they dated before getting married? Tell us the inside scoop!! : )
