OK, Frances and I were talking about memories of New Years Eve, and the infamous Uncle Putz.
The question is - how did Uncle Putz get his name???
Was his name really Putz??

Hi, Tom. Have many stories to share, just have to find time to get to them all. Blackie was some dog, wasn't he? Just like Uncle Putz, they went well together. And Aunt Ruth just sighed and rolled her eyes. Take care.
Thanks for the information on your mom's name. I'm glad to know it although sorry to hear of her confusion with social security. My mom and dad named me Dorothy (my father's wish) but my mom didn't want us both being called Dot so they called me Joan. Untold misery with the confusion between Dorothy and Joan. Thought I would do well for my sons so the first is James so he could be formal with James or informal with Jim - wrong - also much confusion for him. Second son is Steven - wrong again, is it SteVen or StePHen. A mother just can't win!!!
Probably a little late to reply to this but... Uncle Putts got his name from the time he served in the Navy during WW1. Don't know why exactly but was told it was because he took his time doing things and fussed around with whatever he was doing. Do any of you remember his dog "Blackie"? You may all be too young. He had this mid-to-large size black dog that chased cars trying to bite the tires. Uncle Ed (His real name was Edward Faunce) would take Blackie to the shore every summer and Blackie would have a blast on the beach and running loose chasing cars. Yes, Uncle, Bill Waples, Uncle Faunce and your grandfather (my Uncle Dan) would eat raw oysters. I'm not sure besides Walt who else could get them down. I remember Walt bringing his boat to the shore and going fishing where we would have fresh caught fish for dinner many nights. Um, Um, good! I have Mae's name listed that way and Walt changed it to Marie (he always called her Marie) to avoid the Mae Day connotation. Hope this all may be some insight.
I remember my first job out of high school working as a receptionist for a law firm which consisted of mainly Jewish lawyers. I was so inexperienced that many of the lawyers would just roll their eyes when I greeted them good morning. Then came the first office Christmas party I attended and after a couple rounds of drinks I mentioned I had an Uncle Putz. I really thought that was his name and they told me it was a Jewish nickname for (should I repeat this???? - 'D..." - not duck). Well you can imagine the riot that caused. They nearly fell of their chairs with laughter. It's funny how you can connect with people on the strangest things. From that point on, I was greeted every morning by every lawyer with a smile. Thanks Uncle Putz!!!!
I just asked my Mom about the spelling. Believe it or not she said she didn't know, its been spelled both ways. Either one works for her. Like Joyce said, only her family calls her Mae, everyone else Marie.
Aunt Mae (my mom) asked me today why I spelled his name Putz. She said they always spelled it Putts. I said I guess the z is the Jewish spelling. So it's not Putz, it's Putts.
I would like to know why you spell Aunt Kass with one 's' and if Aunt May spells her name May or Mae (I believe she signed her Christmas Cards, Aunt May!)
