Here is a old family fokelore story.. When my mother (grandmom) was young she was going in the water in Sea Isle and didn"t want to wear her wedding ring for fear of losing it. She gave it to Kathleen (maybe Honey) put it on her thumb and told her to go back to the house. It popped off her finger into the sand. Mom told me she saw it drop and reached into the sand but couldn't find it. Next the whole family was digging in the sand. Dad built a wooden frame, got some screening and everyone shoveled sand through it. No ring was every found and I don't think Mom ever got another ring. So when your kids are digging in the sand, keep an eye out.

I asked my mom this morning about the lost ring on the beach story. This is what she said. Uncle Bill Waples was running around with a crowd of drinkers and a woman named Mayme who had two daughters. They would stop by for dinner at Grandmom's and she would feed this whole crowd. Grandmom was such a good cook. And made big meals in the German fashion.
Anyway, Uncle Bill had a big diamond ring that he wore. He took it off to go swimming and gave it to Mayme to hold. Well when he got back to the beach, the ring couldn't be found. So, that's when grandpop made the wooden frame with the screen in it to look for this huge diamond ring. It was never found. But there's some that think that Mayme had claimed to lose it but had kept it.
Mom also said that Uncle Bill married young (when he was 19) to a Catholic woman who died maybe in childbirth. There was a child, but her family kept the child and raised it. There was bad feelings between Uncle Bill and his in-laws about this child. I guess they didn't want Uncle Bill around. I guess he didn't get to be with this child of his much. I had never heard about this first cousin to our parents before. Then Uncle Bill went to France during WWI and had an affair with a woman there. After the war she came over to find Uncle Bill who wouldn't see her. Mom says, she stayed with Grandmom and Uncle Frank showed her around. Uncle Bill wouldn't see her and she went back to France.
I knew Uncle Bill had been married before - his first wife's name might have been Agnes - and they had a son who they named William. I had heard that she died in childbirth and the baby as well. She at least is supposedly buried in the cemetary located on Oxford Avenue north of Roosevelt Blvd - I don't know the name of the cemetary, but many times we would go by there, my father would mention that's where Uncle Bill's first wife was buried. Don't know any more than that.
Mom said that this is the story about the diamond ring and the wooden frame.
Grandmoms wedding ring story is;
She went swimming with Aunt Honey. She handed her gold wedding band to Aunt Honey to take up to the towel so it wouldnt get lost. Aunt Honey dropped it in the water. She didn't wear a ring, after that, until Grandpop bought her Aunt Mae's diamond for $75 before she went to Japan. Grandmom wore that diamond ring from then on.

I never heard how much she sold it for. We should get all of these stories out of mom while she still remembers them.
I THINK IT WAS MY MOM (AUNT HONEY) WHO LOST THE RING HAHAHAHA I THINK I REMEMEBR HER TELLING THE STORY THE ONLY RING I EVER EVER SAW GRANDMOM WEAR HAD THREE BLACK ONYX CHIPS IN IT .
SHE NEVER TOOK IT OFF SHE SAID IT HAD DIAMOND S ORGINALLY BUT SHE HAD THE DIAMONDS REMOVED TO MAKE SOMETHING FOR GRANDPOP?????? MAYBE A RING????? ALTHOUGH I DON'T REMEMBER GRANDPOP WEARING A RING.
Great Story. Although she did get another ring. When my folks were going to Japan in 1955, and needed money, my mom had a diamond ring she had gotten at your Uncle Bill's jewelry shop and she sold it to Grandpop for Grandmom to wear. She wore it for the rest of her life as far as I know. It went back to my mom when grandmom died. Mom had it made into a diamond pendant for herself, but saved the setting. Then she sent it all to me 8 or 9 years ago. I had it restored to a ring and wear it now. I feel it is a great connection to grandmom and my mom. So she did wear a diamond ring for 30 some years.

I was talking to my Dad last night and he didn't know about the other ring. I'm sure he'll chime in when he checks back here, but I'm sure he'd love to see a picture of the ring too!
Thats a really great story, by the way. A true family heirloom. Awesome!
