Got another one from Aunt Mae: Grandmom's Mother Anna Daigler died at age 50 sitting on the john. Her last words were, "Hannah, I think Missy is awake" (meaning my Mom when she was a baby). After she died, Grandmom's Father remarried a woman whose last name was Horn. Mom said that no one liked her, everyone called her "horn". Mom said that she though that her Grandfather had money because of Uncle Bill. She treated her husband badly. She owned a house at Strathmere when they got married and eventually build another one. She rented out the first one. ( Mom doesn't know where she got the money to buy the second house.) Anyhow, she couldn't pay the taxes on either house and tried to get Uncle Bill to pay them. He hated her, so I assume he didn't pay them. Anyhow, she lost the houses. They are still there, to the right of the Ocean City bridge and back. (Not on the ocean)

  • I, too, had heard this story from Mae Waples Casey. In addition to being there when her mother died, she always said her mother died in her arms. She went on to further tell me that when my father (Frank) came in (from where ever) and heard their mother had died, he looked at his sister and said, "Does this mean I can't go out with the guys tonight?" That doesn't sound like my father at all, but as a not quite 15 year old, I guess it makes more sense. She never did say where my father was coming in from and I would love to know. My dad's oldest sister was 17 years older than him and she and her fiance, Harry Sears, were his Godparents when he was Christened. She married the following year and I guess he might not have known her as well as his other siblings. He was only 6 when she died. Later that year, just after his 7th birthday and just a day or two before Christmas, his sister nearest to him in age, died. What a Christmas that must have been for the family. Francis was just 4 years older than him and only 10 when she died of rhumatic fever. When their father married "Horn," my dad was the only one still living at home and he moved in with your grandparents from shortly after his mother died until he and my mother married in 1935. He always felt your grandmother was more like a mother figure to him than a sister - he was very close to her.
  • I've heard mom tell that story often. Here's some of the facts on Grandmom's parents. The Waples family list says that Agnes Anna DEAGLER was born May 7, 1971 and died Oct 27, 1922. She would have been 51 years and 7 months. At that time Grandmom would have been 25 and little Mae was 23 months. Our great grandmother married when she was 17 in 1888. She had her first child a year later when she was 18. Her last child was born when she was 35. Her husband Frank Woolsey Waples was 18 when they married. He lived to a month shy of his 66th birthday. He lost his first wife when he was 52. His second wife's name was Emma Horn.
